Save Our School, Help Us Fix Our Bricks

We are a museum and cultural center located outside of Washta, Iowa; 2020 is our centennial year of the main building, the brick schoolhouse construction. The bricks were brought from the railroad by horse-pulled wagons on a 6 hour journey to the school grounds. The Grand Meadow school operated until the 1970’s, serving the students of the Grand Meadow township. After the school was closed, its students were matriculated to Washta, Marcus, and surrounding areas. Since then, the school has become a museum showcasing rural history and culture date from pre-civil war to present time. The heritage center includes the brick schoolhouse building, the one-room schoolhouse, two room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, a working sawmill, two original log cabins, and other buildings.

With that being said, we are raising money to help tuck point our brick schoolhouse, the centerpiece of the grounds and primary museum. One square foot of brick restoration costs $20, can you help us with a foot or two? We have lots of anticipation for upcoming events but so far several of our fundraisers have been postponed. With support from our community, friends, and followers we hope to be able to restore our schoolhouse and continue showcasing everything from rural United States as well as our displays from around the world!

Every foot counts, we’re taking this all one step at a time! Thank you for considering us on this Giving Tuesday, May 5th, 2020.
